Get a base
A base is a little block with a real mechanical switch held inside it. You never see the switch. You hear it. Pick the click you want: loud, bumpy, quiet, or ridiculous.

Put a face on it
A cap is a real 1u keycap sculpted into a character, with two dots and one line for a face. It pushes onto the switch and it stays there until you want it somewhere else.

Swap the face
Every cap fits every base, so the one you got today goes on the base you got in March. Pull it off, push the next one on. That is the whole trick.

Trade the rest
Faces come out in drops of twenty. Somebody at your school has the one you are missing, and you have the one they are missing.
It is a real keycap
Not a lookalike. It is 18 mm with an MX cross socket, so it also goes straight onto a mechanical keyboard — which is why the grown ups in the house keep stealing them.
The gold ball
One cap in twenty comes out of the machine in gold. It can be any face. You do not get to pick it, and nothing else is ever gold.
